PARTING

Time was when love was all we needed

We believed each other’s lies

Through belief somehow they’d rise to the occasion

So we defined each other to be ourselves

and we were simply good to ourselves

Was it too much to love at any cost?

But then we could play the lover’s part so well

Time was when I could hold you as the hills

held the lake fish-dreams and all

sure of my love’s lofty view

But you were always running off

to where I could not find

so I waited alone untouched and out of mind

Time was when joys would come to us free

as birds on the natural air

Did we love for reasons we could take away?

As wild birds caught die without a hint

we lie with the truth as never before
